Unemployment to blame
Refer to the editorial ‘Donkey route again’; one shudders to think that four Samana-based youths had to undergo a nightmarish experience before making it to America. This awful desperation of our youths to settle abroad is a stark reminder of the spiralling and soaring unemployment in our country. What happened to our claim of being the fastest-growing major economy in the world? Unscrupulous human smugglers fanning across continents must be hounded out and punished severely. The coordinated efforts of all stakeholders can help in curbing the scourge.

BJP govt’s web of myths
Apropos of the editorial ‘Rusty promises’; the web of myths spread by PM Modi lies exposed. The world-class infrastructure that his party claims to have built can be seen in the crumbling airport buildings, bridges and highways, the leaking roof of the new Parliament House building and the huge Shivaji statue that came crashing down the other day. Another BJP claim that the ‘Opposition alone is corrupt and the BJP is the only honest party’ is a myth. Back in 2001, then BJP president Bangaru Laxman was caught on camera accepting a bribe. Another allegation of the BJP is “Congress ke DNA mein corruption hai, 70 saal se Congress ne desh ko loota hai”. The Congress has actually ruled for around 55 years.

Creating deterrence
Refer to the news report ‘Enough is enough: President Droupadi Murmu on Kolkata rape’; the President has stressed on the need for ‘honest self-introspection’. We need to create deterrence in the minds of criminals by holding trial on a day-to-day basis in designated fast track courts. Appeals should be disposed of by specially constituted benches. Penal provisions must be tweaked to prescribe a minimum punishment of death sentence and the sentence must be executed in a time-bound manner. Once implemented in letter and spirit, it may prove a gamechanger to stem the increasing menace.

Political parties under scrutiny
Refer to the news report ‘Plea seeks review of top court’s verdict on SC/ST quota sub-classification’; the demand for sub-categorisation in the SC reservation order has started brewing in many states. Parties like the Congress, Samajwadi Party and Janata Dal (United) may find it difficult to take a political stand in UP, MP, Rajasthan, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana. This is because of the huge presence of SC communities there and the upcoming Assembly elections. While these castes have expressed loyalties to various political parties, the changed context may see them cohesively stay with the Bahujan Samaj Party or Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas). They will keep an eye on any political party that will criticise the sub-classification policy.

Global peacemaker
Refer to the news report ‘PM Modi to share perspectives on ending Ukraine war during Kyiv visit’; PM Modi’s visit to Ukraine presented a historical opportunity for India to become a global peacemaker. Since the Russian attack on Ukraine, India and the West have disagreed on how to deal with the Russian invasion. New Delhi has been keen to preserve its security and time-tested economic relationship with Moscow. There must be geopolitical reasons for India’s silence on Russian actions. But as a rising power, India cannot always view central Europe through the Russian prism. After all, Russia does not view the Indo-Pacific region through India’s eyes. Russia is deepening its strategic ties with China, even as it maintains a cordial relationship with India. As such, India, too, should de-hyphenate its ties with Russia and central Europe.

Draw lesson from BJP folly
Refer to the news report, ‘Dimpy joins AAP, CM hints at fielding him from Gidderbaha’; CM Bhagwant Mann is committing the same blunder as the BJP did by fielding turncoats from the Congress who then lost badly in the elections. Has Mann ascertained the views of the people of Gidderbaha about fielding him as AAP candidate in the upcoming byelection?
