Violin maestro T N Krishnan breathed his last in Chennai on Monday. One among the violin trinity of Carnatic Music, along with Lalgudi Jayaraman and M.S. Gopalakrishnan, Krishnan was a child prodigy who started performing at the age of 11. A recipient of Padma Bhushan (1992), he was also honoured with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1974 and was a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 2006.

Born in Kerala, in 1928, Krishnan started learning under the tutelage of his father. He moved to Chennai during the early 1940s and was trained under Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. His fans remember him for the superb rendition of classical ragas, and also his ‘jingle bells’ performance with Mridangam and ghatam (percussion instruments).

Tributes poured in for Krishnan, who is survived by his wife and two sons. “Today one of the last standing trios of Carnatic music, violin legend, Sangeet Kalanidhi #TNKrishnan passed away at 92. A great artist and a greater human being. His love and unconditional support for SPIC MACAY was unmatched. We all pray for his departed soul. Om Shanti!Folded hands,” posted The Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY) on Twitter.

Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan wrote, “Very saddened to know that violin maestro Prof. T.N. Krishnan has passed away. He was one of those rare musical gems of India for whom music was a way of life. My deepest condolences to his family and prayers that his soul rests in peace. His music lives on timelessly!”

Classical musicians Ranjani-Gayatri wrote, “He strode the world of violin and music like a colossus. The living legend Sri TN Krishnan passes on, leaving the music world bereft. Atma Shanti.” —TNS
