Filmmaker Kumar Ramsay passes away

Screenwriter and filmmaker Kumar Ramsay, the eldest amongst Ramsay Brothers, passed away on Thursday (July 8) due to a cardiac arrest. He was 85. Kumar is survived by his wife Sheela and three sons, Raj, Gopal and Sunil. His son Gopal confirmed the news saying, “He passed away due to a cardiac arrest in the morning around 5:30 am.” Kumar was known for penning most of the Ramsay Brothers’ horror films, including Rishi Kapoor-starrerKhoj.

Production house Ramsay Brothers, which included seven brothers – Kumar, Keshu, Tulsi, Karan, Shyam, Gangu and Arjun – ruled the horror genre, making low-budget cult movies during the 70s and the 80s.

Meanwhile, Kumar Ramsay was instrumental in scripting most of their films, includingPurana Mandir, Saaya, amongst others. He also bankrolled films likeAur KaunandDahshat.
