Were you apprehensive of shooting during the pandemic?

I was apprehensive and my family was totally against it. But after a lot of discussion and thinking, I agreed. Zee TV also assured me of the best of safety measures.

What kind of precautions are you taking?

Maintaining social distance to wearing all personal protective equipment, I’m doing everything. That’s non-negotiable.

Do you miss the live audience?

When you get to hear so many talented kids singing, it feels great, but I do miss the presence of a live audience. However, that is required today in the interest of everyone.

How do you see the kids’ talent this year?

Kids are very talented this year and getting them all on board is marvellous. I don’t know how the team managed to get this kind of superb talent.

You have been a judge in reality shows for a while now. What do you enjoy the most?

I like to do music reality show only with kids. It’s wonderful to have them around. Their innocence, their vibes can really cheer you up. As children are gullible and malleable, this is the right time when we can mould them with the right guidance.

How was your childhood?

I have been singing since I was three years old. My mother is a classical singer and she taught me. I was a lazy kid, but my mother pushed me and motivated me. She was the one who told me – ‘don’t waste your talent’.

Who do you listen to on a daily basis?

My all-time favourites are Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. I also like Mehdi Hasan and Jagjit Singh. Their songs are my favourites too.

Do you have any unfulfilled dream?

I am quite a content person. I have never been over-ambitious. Whatever God has given me I am happy with it and am sure the blessings will continue.

What are your fond memories from Kolkata?

My entire growing up was in Kolkata. One of the most important part of that was the food – right from the famous park street eatery Flury’s to the famous Kolkata phuchka (golgappe) to the mouth-watering sweets. It’s still alive in my memory. My heart will always remain in Kolkata.
