For rower Ashmeet Gill, fitness is a way of life. Born in Gwalior, her ancestral village is near Gurdaspur. Her mother is a physical education professor at SGGS College, Sector 26, while her younger brother is a budding cricketer. Yet, she chose her game, rowing, only once she was in the university!
Ashmeet weighed 97 kg before she decided to become an athlete! She followed a strict diet and fitness schedule to get in shape. Her efforts bore fruit when she represented India at the World University Championship in 2018.
A graduate in law from Panjab University, she is currently pursuing Masters in English from SGGS, Khalsa College. She shares her fitness mantra…
Bhangra sessions
I love my Bhangra sessions and gym time. During the pandemic and even now when we cannot physically practise rowing, Bhangra has helped me a great deal in keeping fit.
Sports is life
During school, I liked to play basketball and netball. But I did not have the zeal to follow it through professionally. It was only in the university that I found a mentor in Deepak sir, Panjab University’s rowing coach, who motivated me to take up the sport.
What does fitness mean to you?
Fitness is a state of mind; it is a daily routine for me now.
Getting stronger
I have also started learning kick-boxing and boxing to get fitter.
Patience is a virtue
Meditation and yoga are important to practice control. It is one field where I need to improve.
What do you eat?
Protein intake is a must. Usually after training, I eat boiled potatoes and eggs. When I am bored, I make a bread pizza for myself. Otherwise, daliya, quinoa seeds loaded with veggies and masala poha work fine for me.
Any fitness accessory you cannot work-out without?
A comfortable outfit is the only thing I need.
My guilty pleasure
I have a sweet tooth; love ice-creams and chocolates.
