Preserving the essence of old gold, but giving it a fresh look is what jewellery designer Harpreet Anand specialises in. “Preserving the pieces of an heirloom, adding a few stones, some carving and a new ornament is ready. And that too within your budget,” says Anand, who is into this business since the last decade.
Something that started as a hobby has turned into a profession, as Anand sits with her ‘karigars’ in Burail (Sector 45, Chandigarh). “Many of us have gold that has sentimental value, but is too old-fashioned to be worn. I work around the different pieces and give a new look.”
Taking inspiration from Victorian and Moroccan jewellery, Anand finds her two favourites in emerald and ruby. “They are regal and also so soothing.”
She travels (currently on hold) in search of inspiration and recreates influences gathered from various quarters.
As for her favourite jewellery designers, she names Farah Ali Khan, adding in the same breath how expensive she is! “One needn’t spend a fortune; some creativity goes a long way in creating affordable pieces. My ‘karigars’ sit with me and the client when designing wedding jewellery and offer something customised as well as affordable.” – TNS
