Punjabi film director Simerjit Singh says the lockdown has taught him to lead a basic life

Known for directing the Punjabi blockbuster Angrez, Simerjit Singh, who is one of the top five directors of Pollywood, says he had never expected that the film would become a milestone in the history of Punjabi cinema.

From Chak Jawana to Daddy Cool Munde Fool 2, how has been your journey so far?

My journey has been good. I have made period films, comedy, action and also films on social issues. Thanks to my team, writers, producers, actors and music directors for their valuable support. Overall, it has been a good experience for me.

Angrez was the fourth highest grossing Punjabi film. Did you expect it?

While making Angrez we were confident about the success of the film but we never expected that it would become a milestone in the history of Punjabi cinema. I am really proud to be a part of this amazing film.

Did you feel the pressure while making Angrez?

I did. But my experience, confidence and dedication that helped me to overcome the pressure.

Your take on the lockdown…

Life in the lockdown has been challenging. It has left no human being untouched. Forced to live in conditions we have never experienced before, it has left us all thinking hard on the true essence of life.

Has Covid-19 affected the Punjabi film industry?

No doubt Covid-19 has affected our industry but my heart beats for the technicians and spot boys, who are the worst sufferers.

What will be the future of Punjabi film industry post we are corona-free?

Hopefully the Punjabi film industry will emerge in a new shape post-corona and it would be a big challenge for us to deliver something different.

The mantra you follow while making a film…

Never stop learning new things. Select a good script, good actors, good composer and a talented team of technicians and you are a winner.

Where are you these days?

I am spending my time with my family in Mohali. It has really been a beautiful experience giving time to my family and to my new ideas for upcoming films.

Who are the real corona warriors?

Doctors, police, health workers and civilians, who are helping people, are the real heroes. In this tough phase of life Sonu Sood has emerged as a true fighter helping migrants to reach their home.

Why are Punjabis popular all over?

I have spent more than 24 years in Mumbai and I have seen Punjabis are popular everywhere. They are warm people. This is the best quality I like in Punjabis.

Which is the best place to eat Punjabi food in Punjab?

Amritsar. Amritsari kulcha is famous. There are so many varieties like dal makhni, desi ghee ke paranthe and more.

Which is the best place to visit in Punjab?

The Golden Temple in Amritsar.

Who is your favourite Punjabi singer?

Can’t name a single person. But some old and new generation singers are my all-time favourite.

What lesson have you learnt from staying at home during the lockdown?

In this lockdown period I have learnt to live with less. Make better relations with your loved ones.

What will be your priority after normalcy returns?

I will be busy in my daily life routine. The show must go on.

Your forthcoming projects?

Daddy Cool Munde Fool 2, one romantic comedy and another one on social issues. Also, I will be making a film based on Jatt Jeona Maur.
