Masks or not, divas would always keep their make-up game strong. Courtesy corona, bright lipsticks have given way to dazzling eye-shadows, while smudge-proof light make-up is replacing thick foundations; even all the mismatched, discarded products are back in use. Here’s how…

“Weddings are still on albeit with less people in attendance; I still get requests, but I have been declining and many brides are getting ready themselves,” shares Dr Shreya Sharma, a doctor who embraced make-up professionally. Those still going to work have made some changes to keep up with the new accessory masks. “The focus from lips has moved to the eyes, those in love with make-up still choose water-proof products to keep up with the constant washing and wiping,” shares make-up artist Mukta.

  • Opt for water-proof, smudge-free products

  • If you must use lipstick, opt for matte to save your masks from stains

  • Use loud make-up for video calls as webcams dull one’s looks

  • Use functional fragrance to carry a halo of positivity around you

  • Keep the hair short, clean; for the time being experiment at home than risk exposure

Change of focus

Now that the face is half-hid, fashionistas make it a point to highlight other features – well-groomed hands and feet, short hair and more. Tips Nav Brar, “One can still work around with masks. Ditch the heavy foundation, go for lighter ones. Up your eye-shadow, blush, contour game. If you must have lipstick, matte is your best bet for keeping your safety gear smudge-free.”

“Lockdown has taught people to be comfortable finally,” laughs hairstylist Aaryan Sharma. Every single day, he’s been tutoring his regular clients online on how to chop their hair at home. “People are opting for health over vanity. In summer, short hair work the best. Most of my regular customers have already opted for zero or number two cut, including a girl, who much to her family’s disapproval went bald.” If colouring seems like one major concern, Aaryan makes a case for salt-and-pepper looks. “Many who wanted to give it a try have finally done that.” He tips one to pick up silver shampoos. “Shampoos with blue pigments ensure that the hair don’t go dirty yellow. If kept with care, salt-and-pepper could be a look to die for.”

Shining skin

“Natural skin is happy skin,” says cosmetologist Pooja Nagdev. Those staying at home can make the most of this time by ditching make-up and opting for organic skin-care rituals. “Post the lockdown, ladies will be more cautious about applying too much make-up and go with a lighter look, as heavy make-up can spread. There will be shorter duration make-up and people are going to avoid the long-wear plastic lipstick. They will rather go for natural products,” she tips. Lockdown is also the time to have a fresh look at unused products. “We all have those loud shades, unmatched foundation. Now that one is increasingly using web chats, one can put these products to good use!” offers Shreya.

Then there is more to enhance one’s personality. Functional fragrances seem to suit the times just perfectly. Different from aromatherapy, this is intentional use of certain fragrances like citrus scents, jasmine or rose. “Jasmine enhances positivity, pine elevates mood, lemongrass reduces stress; functional fragrance could be the new trend in post-corona world,” tips Mukta.
