Model-actress Amrit Aulakh says like most Punjabis, she is hardworking and fiercely independentWhen tradition meets modernity
Mona
Though Amrit Aulakh grew up in Singapore, frequent trips to Punjab kept her glued to phulkari, parandis, saag-makki di roti and the warmth of an extended family. With films like Lukan Michi and Munda Faridkotia to her credit, Amrit now calls Chandigarh home.
Growing up
I grew up in Singapore, but was always close to my motherland. The Punjabi community in Singapore is 15,000 strong, so we celebrated our festivals – Lohri and Baisakhi – keeping our traditional ways alive. We also made frequent trips to Punjab, as we have a farmhouse near Ambala. I recall many visits to the Golden Temple, especially one when I was about six or seven and lost my parents in the crowd. That was scary, but I was looked after well till they found my parents and what a relief it was to see them! Juttis, Patiala salwars to parandis, I have loved it all while growing up and still love to dress up traditionally. My favourite pass-time has been sleeping on manjis under the stars during our trips to Punjab.
Steps to Pollywood
I started modelling at 14. Next step seemed like acting and I auditioned for Jatinder Mauhar’s Saade Aale. That was my first Punjabi movie, though it’s yet to be released. I bagged more projects and decided to make my mark in Pollywood!
Pronounced Punjabi trait
Like most Punjabis, I am hardworking and fiercely independent. Like all people living abroad, I too started earning while studying. I did a couple of jobs, worked with Singapore airlines alongside modelling. It is with my own hard-earned money that I have bought myself a house in Chandigarh. Single-handedly, I have built a life for myself here.
Saag & ganna
I love food like any Punjabi. A bowl of saag, one makki di roti with a cup of coffee can take me through the day happily. But ganna (sugarcane), I can have all day long.
I am listening to…
Currently, I am really enjoying Ranjit Bawa’s latest songs. His songsare really close to my heart.
Role I want to do
I would someday love to be in the shoes of Mai Bhagoji. Bollywood has seen Kangana Ranaut play Rani Lakshmi Bai; I would like to do that with our very own warrior-saint.
Learning in 2020
Firstly, take out time for family always; it’s with them that we exist. Secondly, save; even if you earn just Rs 500, save Rs20! And, most importantly, be kind and compassionate.
Up next
I spent the lockdown with my parents in Canada. I am glad to be back in Punjab though. Projects are commencing, about which we can talk in due time. I am happy to be back on the sets.
