Saif Ali Khan recently conducted a webinar in which he spoke about nepotism in general and said there were various levels of it. Calling nepotism, favouritism and camps as different subjects, Saif said even he had not been spared! He expressed that he was happy to see that people like Nawazuddin and Pankaj Tripathi had become household names.
Faces trolls
His comment did not go down well with netizens. Trolls and memes started targeting the actor, who is the son of renowned actress Sharmila Tagore and late cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. “Saif Ali Khan: I am the victim of nepotism.” Is this a joke?,” reads a meme. “#SaifAliKhan who brought the theory of eugenics and gifted genes to justify nepotism in 2017, today talking about being a victim of nepotism. His mother bought him the National Award over Shah Rukh Khan in Swades. He’d even tried to trivialise the nepotism debate at an Award Show,” tweeted a user. “Congratulations #SaifAliKhan. You just graduated from the Ananya Panday institute of Struggle!!,” reads another sarcastic tweet. IANS
“I have heard Sushant himself say that ‘yes nepotism exists’ and that there are a lot of people who have made it through their own steam. And I think that is a struggle that is ongoing, as long as people get a fair chance that seems to be the way of the world. I really think it’s not okay to give people with a certain background a chance over people who have more talent,” he said.
Talking about Karan Johar, Saif added, “As far as Karan is concerned, he has made himself a large symbol because he has put on so many different hats. It seems like he’s attracting a lot of flak for it. I am sure it’s not all deserved. The truth is always complicated. There’s much more to it, but, unfortunately, people aren’t interested in that. They are just interested in symbols. He just happens to be a symbol for something at the moment that is not very popular. I hope the tide is over and better things that he is known for, like a filmmaker and producer, shines through.”
