On International Dance Day, famous choreographers share the special number that makes their heart leap in joy

When every move is rhythmic

Mona

Reading and dancing are, according to the famous French philosopher Voltaire, the only two amusements that will do no harm to the world! If soaking up books is your favourite strategy to beat corona lockdown, how about shaking a leg too? On International Dance Day, here are a few choreographers who share their special dance numbers.

It’s only getting better

Dus Bahane 2.0 remains my favourite dance number. And it is special because it was my first song as a Bollywood choreographer. This debut with the talented Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor will always be memorable. We rehearsed for this in Serbia for almost 10-12 days and every day was fun with the two amazing dancers. I have enjoyed each bit of my dance journey from being a learner to a mentor to a Bollywood choreographer. Every year is a new step, and this journey is only getting better. — Prince Gupta

Beat upbeat

Dance has been my ticket to television, which has been my ambition ever since I remember. In the last seven years of this amazing journey, I have been part of five reality shows. Tattad Tattad (Ramji Ki Chal) from Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela is my favourite number. This was the first song that I choreographed at India Got Talent show two years back and even got a standing ovation. The beat and Ranveer with his stellar moves has set the benchmark high. Whether we have performed it within the city or outside, it has always won huge applause. — Kunal Goyal

Classical note

My all-time favourite dance number is the song Piya Tose Naina Laage Re from the hit film Guide. It has the most beautiful beats and is very close to the form I like — semi-classical. I have been dancing for 22 years now and have realised that now the dance forms have become more ‘musically’ correct. I am purely from a folk background, so it has taken me a lot of time to learn new body movements. I wish I had the swag to do it, but that said folk and semi-classical would always be my first love. — Vaishali Sagar

Childhood passion

Long Train Running by Doobie Brothers remains my favourite. The first choreography I did for a small amateur competition was to this song. It’s not exactly a dance number, but is still my favourite. Every time I hear it, I remember how it all started. I owe being in this field to my mother, who was a theatre director and got me involved with dance mainly to keep me occupied. One thing led to another and I loved studying dance professionally in Australia. I trained in ballet, jazz and contemporary. My Indian innings started in 1998 with The Danceworx. Currently, I love choreographing international dance companies in the artistic contemporary dance space. — Ashley Lobo

Truly inspiring

My go to-dance number remains Ek Pal Ka Jeena from the film Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. That track filmed on Hrithik Roshan inspired a generation of dancers and I was one of them. It’s been about two decades in the industry now; I also learnt how to tackle highs and lows of life along with dancing. I have been on nine reality shows, but still given an opportunity I go back to this number; it has been an excellent starting point to a fulfilling journey. — Naveen Arya
