Two individuals managed to secure loans worth Rs 30 lakh from a bank by impersonating as Municipal Corporation employees with the help of insiders. A woman posed as a sanitation worker and a man pretended to be a sanitary supervisor in the case to carry out the fraud. Each of them successfully obtained a loan of Rs 15 lakh by submitting forged documents.

What makes the case even more serious is that, with the help of a clerk from the Municipal Health Department, they were able to get fake salaries deposited into their bank accounts from the official municipal account, further strengthening the illusion that they were legitimate employees.

The forged documents included fake identity cards, salary slips and even salary transfer records. They also used fake signatures and stamps of a municipal health officer to prepare three months of fake salary slips. The scam, which dates back to the previous year, only came to light when the loan installments were not paid prompting the bank to verify the borrowers’ details with the Municipal Corporation. It was then revealed that these individuals had never been employed by the MC.

Municipal Commissioner Gulpreet Singh Aulakh stated that a clerk in the Health wing has been suspended. The investigation has now been handed over to the Joint Commissioner.

According to the health officer’s report, the clerk manipulated a list meant for processing the leave encashment of real sanitation workers. Without obtaining the necessary signatures from the officer, he altered the list, deleting the names of actual employees and inserting names of private individuals.
