Ludhiana, July 8

In an initiative aimed at boosting the district’s green cover, the Ludhiana administration will conduct a massive plantation drive by planting 1.33-lakh saplings at several locations on July 12.

The mass drive would be part of the ‘Wake-up Ludhiana’ campaign, wherein the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation, municipal councils of various towns in the district, Rural Development and Panchayats and Public Works departments have been assigned specific plantation targets.

The Ludhiana MC would plant 22,300 saplings at 21 locations while the municipal councils at Khanna, Sahnewal, Malaud, Samrala, Machhiwara, Mullanpur Dakha, Raikot, Jagraon, Payal and Doraha, under the supervision of ADC (urban development), would collectively plant 1,270 saplings in their respective areas.

The Rural Development and Panchayats department would be responsible for planting 1.1-lakh saplings at Galib Kalan, Sidhwan Bet, Khasi Kalan and Latala villages. Additionally, around 200 saplings would be planted by the PWD (B&R) Department on its land in Gehlewal village on Rahon road.

“Residents are requested to visit these locations on July 12 from 8 am to 12 noon to plant saplings. They could plant a sapling, take a selfie, and upload the same on a Google form to generate an online certificate,” DC Sakshi Sawhney said.

She highlighted that this initiative was a significant step towards enhancing the green cover in the district. Considering the rapid depletion of forest cover, the focus is on maximizing plantation efforts.

She emphasised the importance of providing ample green spaces to Ludhiana and stressed the need for the proper maintenance of the planted saplings.
