12 accident-prone-spots found in Ludhiana road safety report

A booklet titled “Road Accident Black-Spot Improvement Plan for Ludhiana Municipal Corporation Roads”, published by the Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana, with support from the Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Centre, SAS Nagar, was released on Monday.

Rahul Verma, a member of the Punjab Road Safety Council, presented key highlights of the report, offering valuable suggestions to eliminate traffic bottlenecks and streamline vehicular flow across the city. Navdeep Asija, advisor to the Punjab Government, also delivered a separate presentation.

Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora, Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma, ADCP Gurpreet Kaur Purewal, Municipal Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal, Council member Rahul Verma and Advisor Navdeep Asija jointly addressed a press conference on traffic-related issues in Ludhiana.

The presentation identified a total of 12 accident-prone black spots in Ludhiana. These include: UPSC Jain Charitable Hospital; Bobby Palace to Shingar Cinema; Sethi Ice-Cream T-Point, Metro Road; Punjab National Bank; Itta Wala Chowk; Vishwakarma Chowk; Durga Mata Mandir; Jagraon Bridge; Jai Mata Chintpurni Dhaba to Bharat Petrol Pump; State Bank of India to Pavilion Mall; Police Line, Deep Nagar; and Sabji Mandi Chowk. These areas have been classified as high-risk zones based on accident data and will be prioritised for remedial measures.

The presentation also noted a decline in road accident-related fatalities in Ludhiana, attributed to coordinated efforts by the police and civil administration. Fatalities dropped from 403 in 2023 to 377 in 2024, indicating progress in road safety initiatives.

In response to media queries, MP Arora announced the construction of a foot overbridge near the General Bus Stand to help reduce congestion. He also confirmed that the two-way vehicular movement on the elevated road from Hero Bakery Chowk to Pakhowal Road, initially introduced on a trial basis, will now be made permanent following its successful implementation.
