“Residue-free production is the voice of the masses,” observed Dr Rohitash Singh, Professor and Head, Agronomy, GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, while addressing the farmers at the monthly training camp of PAU Organic Farmers’ Club, organised at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. A total of 95 farmers attended the camp, held under the auspices of Dr MS Bhullar, Director of Extension Education, PAU. Dr Singh urged the growers to motivate their fellow farmers to opt for commercial and domestic organic cultivation so as to fulfil the producer-consumer demand and ease the financial burden for the prosperity of their families.
Dr SS Walia, Director, School of Organic Farming, highlighted the rising significance of organic farming in enhancing productivity, preserving ecological balance and achieving sustainability.
Resource persons Dr Gurveer Kaur, Processing and Food Engineering expert; Dr Kuldeep Bhullar, fruit science expert; and Dr Sandeep Sharma, soil scientist, talked about processing and nitrogen packaging of pulses; natural practices for the management of fruit orchards; and soil health management, respectively.
Manpreet Singh Grewal, President of PAU Kisan Club, and Rupinder Kaur, Progressive Organic Farm Woman, shared their experience of successful organic farming, giving dual advantage of pesticide-free production to the public at large and profitability to the growers.
Dr TS Riar, Programme Director and Additional Director Communication, called for open communication between the farmers-scientists for the speedy solutions to the organic cultivation related queries as well as resolving the myths surrounding organic growing of the crops.
