Kila Raipur, Heeran and Attiana began their campaign with victories in the Aryan Cup Hockey Tournament for Boys U-16, being organised by the Aryan Hockey Club that kicked off today here at the Olympian Prithipal Singh Stadium of the Punjab Agricultural University. The tournament is dedicated to the memory of former national-level hockey player and prominent game promoter, Jagbir Singh Grewal (Nikku).
In the first match, Kila Raipur lads overwhelmed Nathowal 9-0. The winners scored six field goals and converted three penalty corners to complete the rout. Rajbir Singh was adjudged the player of the match.
The second match was played between Heeran and Attiana in which the former came out triumphant 11-2. Gurwinder Singh of the winning team was declared player of the match.
The third and last match of the day, played between Attiana and Ghawaddi, turned out to be a well contested affair. After surviving some anxious moments, Attiana boys wrapped up the issue 2-0. Karanvir Singh of Ghawaddi was named the player of the match.
Former India hockey star, Sukhvir Singh Grewal, president of the organising club said it’s all about nurturing young talent in the sport. This is an effort to inspire the next generation of players in the state where hockey is a beloved sport, said Grewal.
