The Aryan Hockey Club of Ludhiana will organise a hockey tournament for boys in the U-16 category here at the Prithipal Astroturf Stadium of Punjab Agricultural University from December 24 to 29. This initiative aims to encourage and nurture the talent of budding hockey enthusiasts. This tournament is being held in the memory of former national-level hockey player Jagbir Singh Grewal, who died in June.

Teams from Baba Mela Ram Sports Club, Nathowal, along with those from Mahant Kirpa Das Hockey Acdemy, Heeran, Hockey Training Centre, Rampur, GHH Senior Secondary School, Gur Sar Sudhar, Harvest Hockey Academy, Jassowal, Hockey Academy, Ghawaddi, Kila Raipur Hockey Academy , Kila Raipur, and Sports Club, Athiana, and some other outfits will be seen in action during the six-day tournament.

Talking to the mediapersons here today, Sukhvir Singh Grewal, former international hockey player and coach and president of the club, said that the tournament aimed to provide a platform for young players to showcase their skills, gain valuable experience and develop their passion for the game of hockey.

Hockey clinic for young upcoming players

Grewal said hockey clinics for junior players will be conducted in Ludhiana, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Bathinda, Jalandhar, Mohali, Ferozepura and Faridkot. He said they had planned to organise 50 to 60 clinics at these centres every year. This project of Hockey Punjab will work with the support of Punjab Sports Department and in cooperation with the Aryan Hockey Club, Ludhiana, which will finance this project.

“Three to four players in the 7-10 years age group from all hockey centres of a district will be invited for the clinic, where some basic hockey skills and physical development exercise (explosive strength, speed and reaction time) will be taught. There will be proper demonstration, teaching and practice of these skills. In every clinic, hockey experts and physical development experts will be invited for teaching and demonstration,” said Grewal.

Every year six to eight clinics will be held at each centre. All participants will be provided refreshment, lunch and playing equipment (hockey sticks, shoes, playing kits such as pad and balls). This programme is research based on the principle of teaching and long-term athlete development plan, he added.
