As Ludhiana's streets submerged, its resilience and empathy emerged
Punjab has faced such devastating floods after decades, and my city Ludhiana has also been affected.
Its streets, once bustling with commerce and constant motion, were submerged, transforming familiar lanes into uncertain waterways. Yet, amid the sudden disruption, the city’s essence — its resilience and quiet determination emerged unmistakably. Markets groaned under layers of water, scooters halted mid-ride, and the city’s usual rhythm slowed to a cautious pace. But it was in these moments of challenge that Ludhiana revealed its character.
Neighbours coordinated relief, helping the elderly and vulnerable, while volunteers navigated flooded lanes providing essentials to the needy. Community groups and social media channels became lifelines, linking those in need with those willing to help.
The floods, though disruptive, also highlighted the subtle strength of everyday life. As rain battered the city, people adapted to the situation — sharing meals, exchanging information, and supporting one another. Even small gestures — a hot cup of tea offered to stranded commuters, or assistance across a flooded street spoke volumes about the Ludhiana’s spirit. For a city often recognised for its industry and enterprise, the floods served as a reminder that its true foundation lies in its people. Ludhiana endured, adapted, and carried on. The deluge tested infrastructure, but it also showcased empathy, resourcefulness, and quiet fortitude. When the waters rose, the spirit of the city did not falter, it remained steady, unbroken, and unmistakably Ludhianavi.
