Obesity has emerged as a serious health concern in the state.

Punjab ranks among top states in the country for obesity prevalence. According to studies, nearly 40 per cent of adults in the state are obese, with 36 per cent in Ludhiana being affected by the condition. Primary reasons behind the rising trend are traditional dietary habits and evolving lifestyles. The local diet is rich in dairy products such as milk, butter and ghee, which, though highly nutritious, are also high in fat and calories, contributing to excessive weight gain. This, in turn, is leading to an increase in heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, fatty liver and infertility.

To mark World Obesity Day, MASSH Prolife Hospital organised a press conference at a hotel here to discuss obesity and weight management. During the event, Dr Harpreet Singh Jolly provided insights into various aspects of weight management.

He highlighted that Ludhiana was facing severe obesity crisis, with 36 per cent of its adult population affected and women being more prone to obesity than men. Obesity is relatively lower in the 18-34 age group but significantly higher among individuals aged 35-54. The issue was not only about physical appearance but also a major contributor to chronic illnesses such as heart diseases and diabetes. However, with proper knowledge, timely treatment and discipline, obesity could be controlled.

He explained that urbanisation and lifestyle changes have led to a decrease in physical activity, worsening obesity-related problems. The growing preference for processed foods high in refined carbohydrates and low in nutrition is another key factor.

Innovative, effective obesity management techniques

The event also introduced several new and effective weight-loss techniques. GLP-1 agonists (such as semaglutide) have shown promising results in obesity treatment, though their effects may reduce once the medication is discontinued. Additionally, non-surgical techniques such as intragastric balloons and endoscopic plication have proven effective in weight reduction.

However, bariatric surgery remains the most effective and long-term solution for obesity. It includes procedures such as sleeve gastrectomy, roux-en-y gastric bypass and mini-gastric bypass (MGB/OAGB). Studies show that bariatric surgery not only helps with significant weight loss but also alleviates severe conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea.
