In a significant political development, the Congress has suffered a major setback ahead of the Ludhiana West bypoll as senior leader Sunil Kapoor has joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The move is expected to provide AAP with a considerable advantage in the upcoming bypoll.
AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann formally inducted him into the party during a ‘jansabha’ on Tuesday evening. The event was attended by prominent AAP leaders, including MP Rajkumar Chabbewal, Punjab party president Aman Arora and Ludhiana West byelection candidate Sanjeev Arora.
Sunil Kapoor belongs to a prestigious political family of the city and he was a grandson of late Lala Sardari Lal Kapoor, former Punjab cabinet minister and three-time MLA from Ludhiana West. Known as the ‘Mahatma Gandhi of Punjab’, his grandfather played a crucial role in shaping the state politics.
Sunil’s wife has formerly served as a councillor in the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation. Because of the same, his family still maintains deep-rooted connections with the public at the local level. The Kapoor family continues to hold significant influence in the city politics. His decision to join AAP will benefit AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora during the bypoll scheduled on June 19.
