Bumpy ride: Doraha flyover in dire need of repair

Doraha, February 19
The Doraha flyover, a key link on the toll road connecting Jalandhar to Panipat, is in a pitiable condition, with deteriorating infrastructure causing discomfort and risk to commuters. Potholes, worn-out expansion joints and a ripped surface have made travelling on the flyover a challenge for motorists. These issues have been left unaddressed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), leaving travellers frustrated.
The flyover’s condition has worsened over the past year, with potholes obstructing traffic flow at several points. In some areas, deep craters have caused accidents, both major and minor, as drivers, unaware of the sudden hazards, crash into these at high speeds. Many motorists assume the road will be smooth, only to be jolted by the unexpected dips.
The flyover’s expansion joints are worn out, widening gaps between the slabs. The poor road condition not only makes for an uncomfortable ride but also poses a risk to the bridge’s structural integrity. As vehicles repeatedly hit the gaps, experts warn that the bridge could suffer further damage, jeopardising both its lifespan and the safety of commuters.
Pawan Kumar Kaushal, a senior citizen and social worker from the area, expressed his concern: “If the vehicles keep hammering into the gaps, it will surely affect the bridge’s life and the safety of users.”
The frustration of commuters is palpable. Despite paying hefty toll fees, many feel that the NHAI has failed to maintain the road to an acceptable standard. “This bumpy ride has been going on for months, but the authorities have shown no interest in fixing it. The NHAI should be made aware of the situation through the media so that they may finally take some action,” said an irate commuter. Another commuter voiced displeasure: “There’s no smooth stretch at all. We’re paying high toll fee for a bad road.”
When contacted, NHAI Engineer Ankit assuring that the tender for repairs on the Doraha flyover had been approved. “The work on the flyover is identified as a major repair, and soon the process of clearing the ruts and milling will be initiated,” he stated.
