Day 2 of athletics meet
Ludhiana: The second day of the athletics meet began at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Gill Park, Ludhiana. Competitions, including the 10,000-m, 3,000-m, 400-m, 800-m, hammer throw, discus throw, and rope climbing were organised. Both boys and girls participated in large numbers. Principal Dr Sehijpal Singh said due to the hard work of the college sports staff, Dr JS Grewal, Dr Gunjan Bhardwaj, and Shaminder Singh, among others the event was highly successful. The 1987 batch alumni, including Dr SP Singh, Professor of IIT-Delhi, and Dr Aardmanbir Singh Sidhu, Inderpal Singh and Bhupinder Singh attended the programme with great enthusiasm. Dr SP Singh emphasised the importance of physical fitness for success in life, which can be attained through sports. The 1987 batch alumni sponsored special cash awards for the winners worth 1.5 lakhs. Additionally, the top boy and girl athletes meet were awarded a cash prize of Rs 5,100 each.
Lecture on writing skills
The English Department of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, organised an extension lecture on writing skills on February 21 at the seminar hall. The objective of the event was to educate students on the nuances of writing in English. Dr Jaskiran Tiwana, author and Professor at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada, was the resource person of the event. Dr Tiwana enlightened the students on the nuances of writing, while discussing the rhyme scheme, meter and importance of using literary devices. She also talked about books and her inspirational journey of being an author. She shared insights on her debut poetry book titled – ‘The Guava Tree’ which is a collection of uplifting poetry that celebrates life in all its seasons and her second book, titled – ‘Marmalade Memoirs’ that celebrates her childhood and growing up years; she says it is an intellectual exploration into the meaning of life. Being an alumna of KCW, she inspired students as she guided them on future career choices. Principal Kamaljit Grewal congratulated Sabina Bhalla, Head of English Department, and the entire staff for taking the initiative.
Nat’l Mathematics Day celebrated
National Mathematics Day was celebrated by the PG Department of Mathematics at Khalsa College for Women. In this regard various inter-college competitions were organised with support from the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST) and the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. The event featured an extension lecture by Dr RR Sinha, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Computing, Dr BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar. Dr Sinha’s lecture provided valuable insights into the significance of mathematics in various fields and its practical applications. As part of the celebrations, competitions of presentations and poster-making were held. As many as 105 students from various colleges across the state participated in these competitions.
International Mother Language Day
International Mother Language Day was celebrated with enthusiasm at Green Land Convent School, Dugri. The purpose of celebrating the day was to create awareness about their language and culture among people around the world, inspire children to maintain awareness about endangered languages, connect people through language and maintain peace and unity among different cultures. On this occasion, a special prayer meeting was organised in the school. In which the importance of the mother tongue was explained. On this occasion, various activities were organised for the students on the school premises. The events included title writing, poetry competition, debate competition, essay, slogans and poster-making in the mother tongue. The students were taken to the Punjabi lab and informed about Punjabi culture and were made aware of the language.
Orientation programme
Guru Nanak International Public School, Model Town, Ludhiana, organised an orientation programme for the parents of new students to the classes of Balvatika I (Nursery) and Balvatika II (LKG) on Friday. The programme began with a welcome address by the Principal Gurmant Kaur Gill. She elucidated the audience with the spirit of school which lays stress on the holistic development of a child’s personality. She assured the parents that the institution would prove to be the best educational institute for their ward on numerous levels. School counsellor and co-ordinator of pre-primary classes Abhineet Kaur apprised the parents about the vital role that is played by them in the upbringing of their ward, emphasising on the proper dietary habits along with stress-free life style to maintain sound health of their children. Nearly 430 parents attended the programme.
Harmanjeet takes part in quizzes
Harmanjeet Singh, a student of Class VII at Nankana Sahib Public School, Gill Park, showcased his brilliance by participating in multiple prestigious national-level online quizzes. Harmanjeet took part in the Gobardhan Quiz and Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin Phase-II Quiz, both organised by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation. His thirst for knowledge extended further as he aced the Coffee Quiz – Beans & Brains by the Coffee Board of India, the Mahakumbh 2025 Quiz by the Uttar Pradesh Government, and the Data Privacy Awareness Quiz by MyGov and DSCI. His achievements also include participation in the Senior Citizens’ Welfare Awareness Quiz (MSJE), Financial Fraud Awareness Quiz (MyGov and Delhi Police), Energy Efficiency for Sustainable India Quiz (EESL and MyGov), and the prestigious Vigyan Utsav – National Science Day Quiz.
