Chandigarh-based taxi driver shot dead in Samrala, vehicle looted

Ludhiana, August 10

A Chandigarh-based taxi driver was shot dead on the Chandigarh-Ludhiana bypass in Samrala.

His body was found on the highway towards the Chandigarh side early on Saturday morning. Miscreants pumped two bullets into the driver.

The deceased was identified as Ravi Kumar (26). His Maruti Alto car (bearing registration no. PB01C0297) was also taken away by the suspects after killing him. He got married about a year ago only.

Deceased ‘s father Jai Kumar, who is a sanitation worker at the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, said his son had been driving a taxi for the past three to four months. Earlier, he was also working as a sanitation worker with him.

“Yesterday, the victim left home around 7 pm. At 11 pm, he called me and stated that he had got a ride from Chandigarh to Ludhiana and was going to drop passengers there,” he said.

“Around 4.15 am this morning, I got a call from my son who said he was shot at by miscreants and he is going to die. He also sent his location on my mobile following which, I informed the police and reached Samrala,” the victim’s father said.

Samrala DSP Tarlochan Singh, who had reached the scene, said after getting some vital clues, six teams were formed which were conducting raids at various places.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Khanna, Ashwini Gotyal, said passengers who had booked the taxi from Chandigarh to Ludhiana were the prime suspects and the police had also got some clues. Soon, the case would be cracked.

The police have registered a murder case against the unidentified suspects.
