City cyclist Jasmeek selected for Asian Road, Track Cycling Championship
Jasmeek Kaur Sekhon, a cyclist from Ludhiana, has made headlines by setting a new record in the Panjab University Inter-College Track Cycling Championship held on January 19 at the Punjab Agricultural University cycling velodrome here. In the 3 km individual pursuit event, Jasmeek clocked 4.18.789 seconds to create a new meet record.
With her extensive experience in competing at the national and international level, Jasmeek, a student of BA-II at the local Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, is gearing up for the Asian Road Cycling Championship to be held from February 6 to 16 at Phitsanulok (Thailand) and Asian Track Cycling Championship slated to be held at Nilai in Malaysia from February 21 to 27.
A communiqué from Maninder Pal Singh, secretary general, Cycling Federation of India, said, “It is stated that Jasmeek Kaur has been selected to represent the Indian cycling team in the forthcoming championships. Currenty, Jasmeek is attending a camp at Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh.
In the national-level tournaments, Jasmeek, a trainee of Sukhvir Singh, cycling coach of Panjab University, secured bronze medal in the National Road Race Championship (U-16) held at Panvel in Maharashtra in 2021, a silver medal in individual time trial event in National Road Race Tournament (U-18) in Kurukshetra, gold medals in 2 km individual pursuit and 20 km point race in National Track Championship held in Jaipur.
Besides, Jasmeek clinched two gold medals in individual time trial and road race in the 2022 Khelo India Women’s League, emerged winner in 2 km individual pursuit event and bagged third position in 10 km point race during the National Track Cycling Championship held in 2022 at Guwahati. Last year, she finished third in two events to win bronze medals in individual time trial and road race events in Khelo India Women’s Road Cycling League.
Jasmeek bagged a gold medal in individual time trial event in the National Road Race Championship held at Puri in Odisha in 2024.
Jasmeek has represented India in various championships and her participation in these events has not only honed her skills, but also given her exposure to top-level competition. She was the member of the Indian pursuit team that won silver medal in the Asian Track Championship held in Delhi in 2022. Jasmeek also represented the nation in Asian Road Cycling Championship and Grand Prix Charvoq Ladies Criterium Championship in Uzbekistan.
Jasmeek’s coach Sukhvir exuded confidence that her achievements would serve as an inspiration for aspiring cyclists, demonstrating that with hard work, determination and passion one can excel in sports and make a mark in the national and international arena.
