A Class XII student was killed and another injured when a speeding canter hit their motorcycle when they were returning home after appearing in a board examination at Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS), Dhamot, near here, on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Harkirat Singh of Jalha village. The pillion rider, Rajdeep Singh of Majri village was admitted to a hospital in Chandigarh after suffering grievous injuries in the mishap.

The police have booked the driver of the canter, Balraj Singh, of Naromajra village in the Ahmedgarh subdivision on the statement of Baldev Singh, deceased’s father.

Investigating officer Surjit Singh said when Harkirat and Rajdeep were returning home after appearing in an examination at the GSSS, Dhamot, a canter hit their motorcycle on the Dhamot-Payal road.

Harkirat, the only son of his parents, died on the spot while Rajdeep was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh, due to his critical injuries. The condition of Rajdeep was stated to be serious.

The body of Harkirat has been kept at the Payal mortuary and will be handed over to his family after conducting the autopsy.

The police had seized the canter and launched a probe to nab the canter driver.

Further investigations revealed that both youths were students of Class XII of Government Senior Secondary School, Payal, and were appearing for board examinations at Government Senior Secondary School, Dhamot.
