Clogged drains, nullahs in Ludhiana city areas add to residents’ monsoon woes

The monsoon season is going on but nullahs and drains in different parts of the city are clogged with garbage and filth. Huge quantities of trash, including plastic, have been dumped at many places which had led to blocking of the drains.

One heavy rainfall and these mess will turn the city into pools of water. Drains near Bhadaur House, Damoria Bridge, Old Courts Road, Haibowal and other areas were filled to the brim with garbage.

A resident of Haibowal, Deepak Kumar, said every year the drain overflows during the rainy season but no concrete step was taken by the authorities to clean it. “Nearby residents should also keep their surroundings clean also consider the same as their responsibility,” he said.

Bhagat Ram, a shopkeeper near Damoria Bridge, said the whole area near Damoria Bridge turns into a water pool even after a light rain. “It becomes difficult to commute on the road during rainfall. The drain flows from here and besides the stinking smell, especially during the rainy season, it leads to accumulation of water. In addition to this, the threat of vector-borne diseases looms large over the people staying in nearby areas. The drain should be cleaned as soon as possible as heavy showers can create havoc in the area,” he said.

Amanpreet Singh, a shopkeeper from the Bhadaur House area, said the irony of the situation was that the MC office is located at few meters away from the drain, the condition of which is pathetic and nobody seems to be bothered about the same.

“It becomes difficult to pass through the stretch due to the stinking smell and it has become a haven for flies and mosquitoes. Whenever it rains, one can see water getting accumulated here for days, creating insanitary conditions and threat of spread of water-borne diseases looms large,” he added.

The open drain on the Old Courts Road is usually filled with water and after rainfall, it overflows and the road adjoining it is filled with water. On the one side of the drain, one can see huge dump of garbage.

The entire stretch presents a picture of neglect and nobody seems to be paying attention towards its cleanliness.

A tea vendor near the place said the situation remains the same for the entire year. The garbage dump also stinks and during the rainy season, things turn even worse.
