Coffee bean analyser from Ludhiana wins hearts at Coffex Istanbul 2025
Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) supported startup has taken Ludhiana to the global coffee scene. Well, not in terms of coffee beans but as a coffee bean analyser.
During the recently held Coffex Istanbul 2025, Turkey’s largest coffee fair, while most of the Indian delegation focused on showcasing coffee beans, Agsure Innovations Pvt Ltd, the PAU — Punjab Agri Business Incubator (PABI) — supported startup, stood out as the only technology innovator, presenting its AI-powered coffee bean analyzer, a groundbreaking tool for bean quality grading and defect detection.
If you love sipping a freshly brewed coffee, then you know how important is the quality of coffee beans as it significantly impacts the taste and overall brewing experience.
The smart device built with advanced AI and machine learning algorithms, quickly became a center of attraction for attendees from Uganda, Indonesia, Italy, Turkey, Middle East, and South America — countries renowned for their coffee heritage.
“The device not only evaluates bean quality on parameters like moisture, colour and defect count but also enables real-time decision-making for traders and growers,” said Abhinav Mahajan, founder of Agsure.
A high-quality bean, when properly roasted and brewed, will yield a richer, more nuanced flavour and aroma than a low-quality bean. Factors like the bean’s origin, freshness and the roasting process all contribute to the final cup’s quality and the machine helps in analysing the same.
“Being part of the official Indian delegation under the Coffee Board of India was a proud moment. We received overwhelming interest from global coffee producers and are now actively pursuing discussions to deploy our analyser and our mobile ERP platform ‘Agreap’ across international markets,” he added.
“Coffee is still being analysed manually and the analyser is an innovation on the coffee industry and many countries have shown interest in
this machine.
Dr MS Bhullar, Director of Extension Education, Dr TS Riar, Principal Investigator, PABI, and Dr Poonam Sachdev, Co-Principal Investigator, PABI, while applauding the startup, said, “Innovation is not only about technology but also its relevance to market needs. Agsure’s Coffee Bean Analyser addresses a real-time problem for both exporters and producers, enhancing India’s value-added contribution in the global coffee value chain.”
Though Turkey’s support to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor has triggered a boycott of Turkish goods and services by India, Abhinav said they received love and warmth from the people of Istanbul and in fact they were grateful for New Delhi’s support after the 2023 earthquake.
