Commuters avoid peak afternoon hours as city reels under 41.6°C
The maximum temperature rose up to 41.6°C, which is 2° to 3° above normal temperature, in the city. During peak afternoon hours roads in most of the areas witnessed a less number of commuters due to the extreme weather conditions. Even the minimum temperature remain on a higher side at 25°C.
Prof KK Gill, senior agrometeorologist at the PAU, said the temperatures, both minimum and the maximum, have seen an increase of around 3°C, which is above normal. Though there might be western disturbances in a few parts of the state where gusty winds and thunderstorm are expected on Friday, in other parts of the state, the temperature will be on the higher side.
Since the procurement has finished recently and paddy has not been sown, crops such as maize and cotton in the fields are fine as of now.
At the same time, the rising temperatures have left residents worried whose children go to schools in the scorching heat. The parents feel that the government should advance the summer break in case the temperatures witness a regular increase in coming days.
While the majority of the schools (both government and private ones) usually announce the summer break in the third week of May, the final call on the vacations is taken by the government, as per the prevalent weather conditions.
Sale of fruits such as watermelons and muskmelons have picked up due to the hot weather. Surdul, a fruit vendor near Domoria Bridge, said watermelon and other such fruits give a lot of respite to the people in the present weather conditions.
