Comprehensive protective measures need of hour
Multipronged approach needed
The remarkable digital transformation has led to a rise in the number of cybercrimes, ending in significant financial losses to people. Unfortunately, this inclusion of technology is yet to be equated with digital literacy, as people continue to fall prey to cybercrimes. The rise in cybercrime can be attributed to several factors, including the widespread use of digital devices, the expansion of the internet, and the increasing sophistication of cybercriminals. As technology advances, so do the techniques used by cybercriminals. One type of scam that has drawn widespread attention is the ‘digital arrest scam,’ in which scammers pose as law enforcement officers and threaten victims with false arrest unless they make immediate payments. Last year, over 10,000 people of Ludhiana suffered financial losses close to Rs 100 crore. This necessitates action from the government and individuals, as cybercrime not only costs money but also undermines public trust in digital systems. Combating cybercrime will ultimately require a multipronged approach combining legal reform, technological innovation, and continued public awareness. Financial institutions must implement advanced fraud detection systems and secure payment gateways. Only with a comprehensive and proactive strategy can we keep pace with criminals and provide citizens with a secure digital environment while also fostering trust in the digital ecosystem.

Use only verified applications
It appears to be a record of sorts that over 10,000 persons fell prey to cyber fraudsters, losing over Rs 100 crore in Ludhiana last year. The Commissionerate Police were able to recover almost Rs 11 crore of the amount. These figures are troubling. Although government agencies are spreading awareness about possible frauds and cyber criminals, an increasing number of people are falling prey to these crimes. Basic awareness about online scams can help avert such incidents. To protect oneself from online fraud and safeguard digital identity, one must use verified apps only through the online stores, be it for online transactions, gaming, or any other purpose. People should only browse on authorised websites and use secure internet connections. Beware of making financial transactions through public hotspots, as public networks are more prone to the risk of data theft since their encryption can be cracked easily. Users should be vigilant while making card payments. POS machines should not be trusted blindly. One should not compromise on security software for phones/computers. Personal information should also not be shared with anyone. Never click on suspicious links in SMS or emails.

Never open suspicious attachments, emails
Hackers are minting money by blocking or stealing data from people’s computers or phones. Cybercrime has emerged as a major threat. To protect oneself from cyber threats, it is important to follow some basic guidelines. First, never open suspicious documents or attachments from unknown sources, as they may contain harmful malware. Avoid sharing personal information with unknown people, and make others aware of how to identify cybercrimes. Protect computers using a firewall, and purchase and install reputable antivirus software like McAfee, Norton, or others to prevent malicious attacks. Always keep your one-time passwords (OTPs) private. Additionally, regularly change your passwords related to banks and other financial institutions to maintain security. Beware of ‘digital arrest,’ and if you receive a call from someone claiming to be from CID or the police, do not panic. Always verify details before sharing any personal information.

Report if you fall victim to fraud
Cybercrimes are on the rise, and to curb these, the government must form a control unit where each spam call is recorded and immediate steps are taken. People should also beware of sharing OTPs or other bank details with strangers. Mobile phones should be protected with passwords, and these too shall be changed regularly. Everyone must have some app to identify callers on their phones. Beware of downloading unauthorised or inauthentic apps. Reporting a hacked account immediately is also imperative if one has fallen victim to fraud. The police should take necessary steps to control cybercrimes. Agencies that are issuing SIMs must also take care and not issue these without obtaining proper verification.

Keep device software up to date
Cybercrime is any criminal activity that involves a computer, network, or other devices. Cybercrime is advancing with technology, adapting to evade existing defences. Most cybercrimes are committed by hackers who want to make a quick buck, although in a few cases the reasons can be political or personal. To prevent cybercrimes, users should keep software and operating systems up to date. Use antivirus software to scan, detect, and remove threats before they become a problem. Use strong passwords that are hard to guess. Never open attachments in spam e-mails. Do not click on links on strange websites. Never convey personal data over the phone or via e-mail. Contact companies directly about suspicious requests. Keep an eye on the URLs and ensure they are legitimate. Keep an eye on bank statements. To curb the incidents of cybercrime, the Ludhiana Police Commissionerate has launched a round-the-clock cybercrime helpline, as timely reporting of cyber frauds is of the utmost importance. The helpdesk will help the victims in lodging their complaints with the national cybercrime reporting portal, which can immediately block and freeze their accounts to prevent transactions by fraudsters. Citizens should report any scam to the police immediately to help the police catch hold of criminals.

Make special units to combat menace
To curb the rising menace of cyber fraud, public awareness should be spread through regular campaigns to educate citizens about common fraud tactics, including phishing, fake job offers, and fraudulent calls. The media should be responsible for spreading this awareness. Secondly, enhanced cybersecurity by using strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, and updated security software among individuals and organisations is important. There should be dedicated cybercrime units with skilled personnel and advanced tools to track and counter cybercriminals effectively. Stringent laws and penalties are also required to keep pace with the evolving tactics of cyber criminals. Offenders should be punished severely. By combining education, technology, and law enforcement, cyber fraud can be effectively minimised.

Govt, cops should spread awareness
With cyber fraud on the rise, a comprehensive approach is needed to safeguard individuals and organisations. Some key measures include public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about phishing, scam calls, and fake websites through workshops, social media, and media outreach. Enhanced cybersecurity by promoting the use of strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, and regular system updates for individuals and businesses. Setting up specialised cybercrime units and establishing dedicated teams with advanced tools and trained personnel to address cybercrimes effectively. Stringent laws to address modern cyber threats and imposing stricter penalties to deter criminals. Bank collaboration for working with financial institutions to implement real-time fraud monitoring systems and quick fund recovery mechanisms. Training programmes for law enforcement and IT professionals to train them in ethical hacking, forensics, and fraud detection techniques. Community initiatives to encourage local cyber safety groups to spread awareness and report suspicious activities. Global partnerships for collaborating internationally to tackle cross-border cybercrime. A coordinated effort combining education, enforcement, and technology can effectively reduce cyber fraud and protect citizens.

Launch special helplines
To address the rising cyber fraud in Ludhiana, the reporting system for such crimes should be strengthened, and a helpline number should be launched. Public workshops and training sessions should be offered to people to make them aware of cyber scams. Also, the authorities concerned should make sure that cyber criminals get strict legal punishment. These steps will surely help in combating and reducing cyber fraud in Ludhiana.

Never share OTPs with unknown persons
Everyone must save themselves from the cybercrimes that are becoming increasingly common. To save people from these attacks, instructions have been issued by different bodies, such as the RBI and all banks in the country. These instructions include never sharing account details or OTPs and never answering calls from unknown persons etc. These instructions must be followed in letter and spirit by residents, and the police must take strict action against the criminals.
