The main Opposition Congress on Wednesday wrested control of the Mullanpur Dakha Municipal Council with party candidates getting elected as the president and the vice-president of the civic body.

While Jaswinder Singh Happy has been elected president of the council, Bimla Rani has been elected vice-president.

In the House of 13 councillors, the Congress candidates got eight votes each.

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president and Ludhiana MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring has congratulated the newly-elected MC president and vice-president and credited the PPCC general secretary (organisation) Capt Sandeep Sandhu, who remained around to ensure that there was no intimidation of the party councillors, for the party’s victory.

Warring thanked the people for reposing their trust in the Congress. He also hailed the courage of the party councillors, who did not succumb to the government pressure and intimidation.

The PPCC president said it was because of Sandhu’s hard work and leadership that gave confidence to workers and councillors to fight till the end and emerge victorious.

Capt Sandhu thanked the people of the area for showing their faith in the party. He said democracy had ultimately prevailed and the people’s voice had been heard despite all the push and pressure being used by the ruling dispensation.

Swept poll by winning 7 0f 13 seats in Dec

The Congress had swept the Mullanpur Dakha Municipal Council elections held in December last by winning seven of the total 13 seats. While the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Independents won three seats each, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) drew a blank. Besides winning seven seats, the Congress candidates had emerged runners-up on the rest of six seats.
