Besides, the one at Model Town Extension is lying unutilised as cyclists hardly use the track. Unwanted grass has grown alongside the track and school buses and vans can be seen parked on the track, undermining its importance. Due to lack of awareness among cyclists, the track has become more of a footpath for pedestrians. Even some homeless people have started using it as their sleeping place.

As per information, this cycle track was constructed as part of ‘Cycle for Change Challenge’ under the Smart City Mission about a few years back. Construction of 1.6-km-long cycle track was started in 2021. It was opened for cyclists so that they could use it while keeping a distance from the traffic rush, But it could not gain prominence due to lack of awareness and other reasons better known to the cyclists.

Similarly, the cycle track developed on both sides of Malhar Road under the Smart City Mission had completely been occupied by vehicles. This track has been almost converted to a parking lot. People coming to the market park their vehicles on this track. Surprisingly, some commercial establishments and showrooms have set up valet parking facility on the cycle track and whenever any customer comes, valet parking employee will ensure parking on the cycle track only.

Interestingly, the municipal corporation has never taken any action against the establishment owners who have turned the cycle track into a parking lot. Even the traffic police also hesitate from towing away vehicles parked on the cycle track on Malhar Road.

Rahul Verma, a cyclist, said the Malhar road cycle track usually remained encroached upon by vehicles parked there. The authorities concerned must take necessary steps in this regard. The one at the Model Town Extension is too short in length for cycling, he added.

“Cycling is a sport now, and if the city will not provide tracks, how come the youth will get inclined toward this sport,” quipped Aadvik, a cyclist-cum-school student.
