Ludhiana-based Dr Surinder Gupta, at the age of 68, has triumphed over cancer not once, not twice, but three times. His journey through one of the most challenging battles in life has turned him into an inspiration for countless individuals facing cancer today.

To support others in their fight against cancer, Dr Gupta launched a helpline called “I Can Guide,” aimed at educating patients across the country and guiding them on the next steps after a cancer diagnosis.

“Cancer has become a part of my life. I was diagnosed three times, and just a few weeks ago, I completed my last chemotherapy session. I always tell people that instead of succumbing to fear or anxiety, it’s important to stay positive and face it the way we tackle any other life problem. Never let the disease demoralise you or make you feel defeated,” he said.

Dr Gupta’s first battle with cancer began in 2010 when he was diagnosed with urinary bladder cancer. In 2013, he was diagnosed with tongue cancer, followed by a recurrence of urinary bladder cancer in 2020. Throughout these challenges, Dr Gupta emphasised the importance of regular follow-ups. After his initial bladder cancer diagnosis in 2010, he underwent immediate surgery. During a follow-up check-up, doctors discovered four additional small tumours. Since then, he has made it a habit to get a biopsy every three months.

“When cancer reappears, regular check-ups help catch it early,” Dr Gupta noted. His tongue cancer, diagnosed in 2013, was localised and successfully treated. The recurrence of bladder cancer in 2020 was detected during a routine check-up, underscoring the critical role of regular screenings.

“What matters most after a cancer diagnosis is not just the treatment, but the ‘next step.’ Many people become overwhelmed, but it’s crucial to make informed decisions about the next course of action,” Dr Gupta explained. He helps patients navigate their treatment options by consulting with various oncologists, ensuring they choose the best path for their treatment. He conducts lectures across the district, reaching out to villages, industries, banks, schools, colleges, clubs, and social organisations. His mission is to ensure that people no longer fear cancer, but instead face it with strength and courage.

Dr Gupta’s “I Can Guide” helpline is available at 94175 20783, offering free consultation to any cancer patient seeking guidance. Through this initiative, Dr Gupta continues to inspire others, showing that with resilience, regular screenings, and the right support, defeating cancer is possible.
