Despite ban on energy drinks near schools in Punjab, sales continue
Despite the Punjab Government’s ban on the sale of energy drinks in and around schools, shops and food operators continue to openly sell these beverages to young consumers.
In response, the Health Department has initiated regulatory action by visiting such shops and urging vendors not to stock or sell energy drinks, especially to minors.
Punjab has become the first state to implement a ban on energy drinks, citing concerns over aggressive marketing to children and the high caffeine content, which can negatively impact health. This decision forms part of the state’s broader anti-drug campaign, aimed at preventing early exposure to addictive substances.
District Health Officer Dr Amarjit Kaur stated that a one-year prohibition has been imposed on the sale of energy drinks to children throughout the state. The order also prohibits their sale in school canteens, tuck shops and any commercial establishment within a 100-metre radius of schools in rural areas and 50 metres in urban zones.
“Parents should also create awareness among children and monitor their consumption of energy drinks. Schools can play a vital role by spreading information and educating students on the harmful effects of such drinks. The campaign should not be confined to schools alone; parental vigilance is equally important,” said Dr Amarjit.
According to the government notification, energy drinks are typically non-alcoholic beverages containing stimulants such as caffeine, guarana, glucuronolactone, taurine, ginseng, inositol, carnitine and B-vitamins. These drinks often contain caffeine levels of up to 80 mg per serving, which can overstimulate the nervous system.
Civil Surgeon Dr Ramandeep Kaur added that the consumption of energy drinks among schoolchildren could act as a gateway to addictive behaviours. She emphasised that the ban is a preventive measure aimed at protecting the youth of Punjab.
A Class X student, however, revealed that he was unaware of the ban. “I consume energy drinks regularly and no one has informed me about their side effects,” he said.
