Despite ban, sale of Chinese string continues unabated in Sahnewal
A number of cases of human and animal injuries, both minor and major, are being reported despite the implementation of ban on the Chinese string in Sahnewal. Residents say that the administration’s indifferent attitude in ensuring the compliance of the ban has resulted in rising number of incidents.
A social worker, Rajiv Kapila, rued, “The sale of Chinese string in Sahnewal goes unchecked. Children and adults both prefer to use it for its durability. However, it is creating serious problems for people as well as birds who, once entangled, either face injuries or death. It is being used despite the implementation of ban.”
“Getting Chinese string from the shop is very easy. You ask the shopkeeper and he will give a signal to you to come inside and hand over the packet,” said a teenager.
“The use of the Chinese string has caused a number of accidents, resulting in many deaths. Proper vigil should be ensured so that no shopkeeper dares to indulge in its sale,”
said Bajaj.
“It is not a joke. Flying kites with Chinese string puts the one flying it and those standing nearby at a great risk. The shopkeepers, who sell the string, need to be dealt with seriously,” said Sarabjit Singh, who resides in
Sahnewal.
“This string is banned and there are clear instructions that it cannot be sold in any case, and still its sale continues unabated. The administration seems to be least bothered about giving it a serious thought,” said Harbans Singh Sains, another resident.
“When the string is banned, how is it so easily available? How does it enter the country? There is a serious lapse on the part of the government that when a particular thing is banned in our country, how can it enter and become available to buyers?” rued Soni Dariya.
A seller said, “Despite the ban, shopkeepers have no problem in selling the string. When a customer asks for it, the shopkeepers just have to be sure that the former does not disclose it to anyone. The kite lovers, on the other hand, too, are very particular not to reveal the shop from where they buy it.”
Sahnewal SHO Jagdev Singh said, “We are very vigilant as far as the sale and purchase of the Chinese string is concerned. We are conducting raids to nab those selling the banned string. But we can always intensify our efforts as it is a matter of public safety. The culprits will not be spared at any cost.”
He said, “As it is for the welfare of everyone, we need sound public’s support in the matter,” he added.
