DMCH doctors perform 8 liver transplants in 2 months
Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) has created a milestone in the field of liver transplant surgery by performing eight successful liver transplants in a span of two months to provide life-saving treatment to the patients. Out of these, three transplants were made possible through cadaver donations, whereas in five cases, family members donated a part of their liver.
Chief liver transplant surgeon Dr Gursagar Singh Sahota and his team are successfully performing transplant surgeries at the DMCH. The team comprises Dr Ajit Sood, head of the Department of Gastroenterology; Dr PL Gautam, head of the Department of Critical Care Medicine; and Dr Suneet Kant Kathuria, head of the Department of Anaesthesia.
Principal Dr GS Wander said it was a proud moment for the DMCH. “The complexity of liver transplants demands exceptional skills and coordination, and our team has consistently demonstrated their expertise,” said Dr Wander.
Dr Sood said Punjab and adjoining states had a high liver-related disease burden. Patients get liver problems due to alcohol abuse, hepatitis B and C viruses, obesity-related (fatty liver), etc and these issues are on the rise due to a change in lifestyle.
“The DMCH gets many patients suffering from end-stage liver disease who are referred from other cities and states. Many of these patients need liver transplant operations to save their lives. Earlier, such patients had to go to metro cities, but now the DMCH has started a liver transplant unit to provide state-of-the-art services to the people of Punjab and adjoining states at an affordable cost,” he added.
