Doraha school athletes shine with 41 medals at zonal meet

Bagged an impressive haul of 27 gold, 12 silver and 2 bronze medals

The young athletes of Guru Nanak Model Senior Secondary School, Doraha, have bagged an impressive haul of 27 gold, 12 silver and 2 bronze medals at the Punjab School Education Board Zonal Level Athletics Meet that was held at School of Eminence, Sahnewal, recently.

Anoopjot Kaur secured three gold medals in 400 m, 80 m hurdles and 4x100 relay race. Gurleen Kaur also secured three gold medals in 100 m, 200 m, 4x400 relay, while Kamalpreet Kaur secured two gold medals in 400 m and 4x400 relay race. Divanshi secured two golds in 200 m and 4x100 m relay. Akshita secured a gold in 4x100 relay and Hargundeep grabbed two in 600 m and 4x100 relay races. Sunehpreet bagged a gold in long jump and in the 4x400 relay, while Gurleen Kaur secured one in 400 m. Vansh Garg, Gurkaran Singh and Jagwinder Singh secured a gold in 4x100 m relay. Gurjot Singh won three golds in 100 m, 200 m and 4x400 m relay. Harbeer Singh, Japanpreet Singh and Habish Ghai grabbed a gold in the 4x400 relay race. Silver medals were won in different athletic events by Divanshi, Akshita, Sunehpreet Kaur, Kamalpreet Kaur, Gurleen Kaur, Kanika, Vansh Garg, Gurkaran Singh, Gaurav Attari and Harbeer Singh. Similarly, Kanika and Vansh secured bronze medals.

Anoopjot who was on cloud nine as she said, “We have finally come out victorious but this is just the beginning as we now know that victory can be ours with a little more involvement and labour, we shall now leave no stone unturned to excel at the next level.”

Exulted over the stupendous achievement of the athletes, president of Guru Nanak Managing Board, Harpratap Singh Brar said, “We endeavour to create an atmosphere where physical education starts with athletics. Athletics being the base for all sports and a healthy body and mind, we encourage all students to participate in athletics. Our coach Udham Singh, an ex-Air Force personnel runs a disciplined training programme, keeping records of students from nursery to Class XII. The talent is then extracted as they grow up and a fine athlete is born. I am proud of our children for coming from rural villages and winning against the best schools in the area. Proud of the parents of these children who encourage them to pursue their extracurricular activities.”

Executive Committee member Roopinder Brar said, “We are happy that our institution is working to promote and prepare raw talent which would have otherwise been left unattended. They are the athletes who have zeal to put their best in the game and excel with the

and perseverance.”

School Principal Dr D P Thakur said, “Some of these athletes seriously lacked any exposure as they belong to a rural background. But the school exhorts them to come forward and show their talent. The students worked hard to win these medals. They are promising students and can work wonders if given a chance”.
