Environmental issues took back seat, AQI remained poor
The year 2024 did not impress or brought any change in the city as far as environment is concerned. Whether it was the issue of pollution in the Buddha Nullah or the smog generated through burning of waste in the open fields or collecting the garbage in a systematic way, no positive environmental change could be seen or felt by the residents.
Highs
Starting from the harvesting season till it came to an end, the authorities focused on cracking whip against those who burnt crop residue. However, it was not enough to improve the conditions. Regular checking was done by the PPCB and the fires were also monitored through the satellites by the law enforcing agencies.
n The online consent for environment or other related matters given by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) brought relief to many especially the industry. In the year 2024, more awareness was generated by the department by organising camps in different areas so that instead of making rounds to the office, online consent was given by the PPCB. By putting entire data and fees online, these consents were made available and the industry appreciated the efforts.
n The third Environment Conservation Fair was held in February at Nehru Rose Garden in collaboration with MC. The fair displayed about 100 stalls displaying various aspects of environment conservation such as tree plantation, soil-water conservation, kitchen gardening, waste management & composting, pollution-free mobility solutions, air pollution, eco-friendly packaging, energy conservation, healthy food with special emphasis on millets were set up.
n The administration had launched “Wake up Ludhiana - an agenda for environment” under which thousands of saplings were planted throughout the city.
Lows
The air quality of the city and surroundings remained in the “poor” category. Residents complained of respiratory ailments and the city witnessed low visibility due to smog.
n Despite sincere efforts made by the “Kale pani da morcha”, the campaign failed to bring any positive results. The industrial, domestic and medical waste continued to pollute the Buddha Nullah in 2024.
n Whether it was electroplating industry or the dyeing units, the environment was continuously polluted by the industry. The notices served by the National Green Tribunal, PPCB, failed to bring the desired results.
