The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political Bharat) has issued an invitation to all farmer unions, labour groups, student organisations, shopkeepers and employees across the state to join the ‘Zameen Bachao Rally’ on August 7 at the grain market in Jodhan village, Ludhiana district. The call was made during a press conference organised after a review meeting to finalise preparations for the event.

Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal accused the state government of succumbing to corporate pressure by promoting a controversial land pooling policy. Described by protestors as a “black policy,” it aims to transfer fertile agricultural land to private developers at throwaway prices. “Over 65,000 acres currently produce vital crops such as wheat, paddy and vegetables that feed the state and the nation. Converting these lands into concrete jungles will cause food insecurity and widespread hunger,” said the leaders.

Citing past land acquisition efforts dating back to 2011, farmers highlighted many affected families have yet to receive promised plots or financial compensation. “Some have suffered such financial distress that they have been unable to arrange their daughters’ weddings,” said a spokesperson.

The leaders also criticised the government for its failure to resolve previous procurement problems during the paddy season. They claimed the cabinet committee’s recent hesitation to approve adequate storage solutions signals ongoing neglect of farmers’ concerns. “Instead of protecting every grain grown by farmers, the government is pushing exploitative policies,” they added.

The press conference also announced a series of upcoming Maha Panchayats across the country to intensify the movement and push for the reversal of the land pooling policy. These are scheduled in Haryana (10 August), Rajasthan (11 August), Madhya Pradesh (14 August), Baba Bakala in Punjab (16 August) and Uttar Pradesh (17–18 August).
