Farmers from across the state will gather at the Dana Mandi in Samrala tomorrow to celebrate their ‘jitt’ (victory) in forcing the state government to withdraw the land-pooling policy. The rally, being held under the banner of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), will see participation from over 32 farmer organisations.
BKU (Rajewal) leader Balbir Singh Rajewal told The Tribune that thousands of farmers were expected to attend the event. “Apart from celebrating the withdrawal of the land-pooling policy, we will also announce our next course of action. Several serious issues are being neglected by both the state and Central governments. The upcoming movement will be to awaken them from their slumber,” he said.
Raghbir Singh Benipal, organising secretary, Jamhuri Kisan Sabha Punjab, said farmers and leaders from all districts would be present to discuss key issues concerning the farming community. “Villagers nearby are preparing langar for over 50,000 farmers. Huge tents and a stage are being set up to accommodate participants. I urge all farmers to come in large numbers,” he added.
The leaders also expect the government to provide compensation to flood-affected farmers. Meanwhile, the farmer leaders were busy holding meetings in their respective areas and were encouraging farmers to take part in the rally in good numbers.
