In a show of growing resistance against the state government’s proposed land pooling policy, two major farmers’ unions — BKU (Lakhowal) and BKU (Kadian) — voiced strong opposition during their monthly meetings held this week, calling the policy a corporate-driven move that threatens agrarian livelihoods.

During a meeting of the BKU (Lakhowal) held on Sunday, its state president Harmeet Singh Lakhowal declared that farmers would not surrender their land under the land pooling scheme.

In a meeting of the BKU (Kadian) held on Saturday, president Harmeet Singh Kadian echoed similar concerns. Both leaders called upon rural communities across the state to mobilise in large numbers and make their voices heard at the August 24 mahapanchayat to be held in Samrala.
