The city is already buzzing with anticipation for the June 19 byelection in the Ludhiana West constituency. To win the seat, candidates and major parties are making all efforts to appeal to the electorate. The family, voters and supporters of Gurpreet Bassi Gogi, the incumbent MLA in the constituency whose untimely death is the reason for the bypoll, believe that if AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora wins the seat, it would be a true homage to Gogi.

His family is taking care of Ward 61, which has about 11,000 voters. Dr Sukhchain Kaur Gogi, his wife, goes for canvassing along with senior leaders of AAP.

“Though my husband remained in the Congress for a long time, he joined AAP and became an MLA. Being his wife, it became my duty to support the party, which made him the MLA. Supporters and workers of Gogi accompany me to reach out to the masses to seek votes for the AAP candidate,” said Dr Sukhchain Kaur.

Recently, Dr Gurpreet Kaur, wife of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, visited Gogi’s house and along with his wife, she reached out to voters in favour of Arora.

“Voters in Ward 61 have regards for my father. They have been associated with our family for a long time. My father used to hold meetings with the voters on a daily basis and resolved issues within no time. In some issues, even if he had to take a stand, which was not suitable to others, he would go for it. My mother is regularly meeting the voters, requesting them to vote for AAP, to vote for my father as it would be a real tribute to him,” said Savraj Gogi, son of Gogi.

Though during his recent visit to the city, former Congress Chief Minister Charanjeet Singh Channi had levelled allegations that Gogi was not happy in AAP. Channi had said the MLA had a word with him about how he was being sidelined by the AAP leadership.

Even before the elections were announced after Gogi’s untimely death, speculations were rife that AAP would provide the ticket to Gogi’s wife but that did not happen and she was made the chairperson of PEDA.

“The way the campaigning is being done by Gogi‘s wife and son in Ward 61, it looks that the family is working hard for the AAP candidate to win the elections and there are no differences with the ruling government,” said a close aide of Gogi, wishing not to be quoted.
