Ground report: Maherna govt school ropes in social activists, experts for improving facilities
Works towards reducing financial burden of co-curricular activities
Government Senior Secondary School, Maherna Kalan, Ludhiana district, has roped in social activists and educationalists to arrange infrastructural and human resources for further improving the quality of education being provided at the school.
Members of the school management committee are working towards enhancing the students’ capabilities and skills, enabling them to perform on par with those from private schools in urban localities.
Construction of a multipurpose hall and functioning of eco, science and literary clubs under direct supervision of a separate teacher have persuaded students to perform better. A team of experts in various subjects has been roped in to sensitise the students on the various aspects of the respective subjects.
Davinder Singh Purba, principal, said that parents, including office-bearers of the civic bodies of Maherna Kalan, and surrounding localities, had voiced full support for the campaign launched by the staff to upgrade learning facilities by roping in social activists and educationists of the region.
“Besides helping with the renovation of a multipurpose hall at an estimated cost of Rs 3 lakh, the enthusiasts have supported us in organising events for improving the students’ personality while developing a scientific temper,” Purba said. Purba added that, because of this, the students had started performing better in interschool competitions being organised by the Education Department and private institutes.
Science mistress Ramandeep Kaur informed that Harneet Kaur, Anshpreet Kaur, Karandeep Singh and Mohammad Rehan had won prizes at the science exhibition held by the department recently.
Contrary to the norm, students were asked not to burden their parents with preparation of science models or buying other items for participating in competitions.
“Observing that enthusiasm is often dampened due to financial constraints, we decided to provide all inputs either from our own pockets or from contributions made by social activists,” the principal said, claiming that every participant is encouraged with prizes. Outstanding performers and those observing full discipline are compensated with extra marks in examinations as per the Punjab School Education Board’s guidelines.
