Hundreds of students from various schools in the region took part in ‘Run for Unity’, an event organised by the district administration, as a token of respect to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on his 150th birth anniversary on Friday.

Malerkotla SSP Gagan Ajit Singh, Jagraon SSP Dr Ankur Gupta and Khanna SSP Dr Jyoti Yadav supervised the run for unity events held at district, subdivision and block levels.

“Observed as National Unity Day (Ekta Diwas) today is a day of pride for each one of us as we celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, who was instrumental in integrating about 565 princely states into India,” said SSP Gagan Ajit.

Speakers recollected that Mahatma Gandhi had conferred the title of ‘Iron Man’ on Patel in recognition of his firm determination and outstanding statesmanship.

SP (PIB) Rajwinder Singh Randhawa, SP (D) Gursharan Singh Sandhu, DSPs Manavjit Singh Sidhu, Atish Bhatia, Sanjiv Kapoor, Sukhdev Singh and Satish Kumar led participants during ekta marches in their respective regions.

Participants held placards with slogans ‘Run for Unity- Run for India’, ‘Ek Bharat- Shreshtha Bharat’, ‘Strong Roots-Stronger Unity’ and ‘From many – one India’.
