Officials of the Municipal Council have been advised to implement guidelines of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding solid waste management by making maximum utilisation of resources at their disposal.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Sukhpreet Singh Sidhu issued the instructions after reviewing the functioning of Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and Plastic Recovery Facility (PRF) in the town. These systems have a capacity of 7 tonnes daily.
Government officials associated directly with the Swachh Bharat Mission project were further advised to rope in elected councillors and social activists to sensitise residents to the need to generate minimum possible garbage and segregate the solid waste before being collected by workers of the sanitation department.
“Besides making the maximum use of all resources available with the civic body, you must rope in elected councillors and office-bearers of social organisations to spread awareness about the need for segregating solid waste at the point of generation before being collected by workers of the sanitary department,” ADC (D) Sidhu advised civic body personnel led by Executive Officer Vikas Uppal and Sanitary Superintendent Harpreet Singh after inspecting various placed related to solid waste management.
The ADC (D) claimed that the surroundings can be turned clean, green and completely garbage-free if all residents start conserving the generation of solid waste and segregating garbage on their premises.
Solid waste management has remained an uphill task for the local civic body for varied reasons. Lack of dumping sites, failure to get a ban imposed on single-use plastics and disproportionate employment of Safai Sewaks in relation to increase in area and population of the town, were cited as major reasons behind the poor disposal of garbage in the town.
