The woman, allegedly driven to take the extreme step due to sustained domestic harassment, set herself and her son ablaze on the rooftop of her marital home.

The tragedy has ignited public outrage, but police officials have assured the public that justice will be served without delay

Soon after Preeti’s father, Amrik Singh, filed a formal complaint detailing her emotional distress and harassment by in-laws, Sadar Police Station moved swiftly.

Within hours, an FIR was registered under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 306 (abetment of suicide) and Section 498A (cruelty by in-laws).

Preeti’s father-in-law Vijay Kumar and mother-in-law Kulwinder Kaur were arrested the same evening.  Other alleged accused, aunt-in-law Babbli and grandaunt-in-law Anita, are both currently absconding.

“We are treating this case with the utmost seriousness. Arrests have already been made, and we are committed to nabbing all those named in the complaint,” said SHO Prabhjot Kaur.

A forensic team was immediately dispatched to the scene to gather physical evidence. Preeti’s mobile phone — which played a critical role in alerting her family to the incident — has been seized and is being analysed for call records and messages that could strengthen the prosecution’s case.
