India’s first international slap fighting champion honoured

Jujhar Singh brought glory to Punjab by showing his prowess as a world-class slap fighter at the international Power Slap championship in Abu Dhabi this October.

Jujhar was honoured at an event jointly organised by humanitarian organisations Sikhs For Business and United Sikhs here recently.

The player shared that he felt charged as he entered the arena after offering a prayer to the Almighty, while remembering Sikh warrior Hari Singh Nalwa, to become the first world champion in this peculiar sport. He added that this victory was not only his but that of Punjab’s youth.

He added that it was not an easy game as one could get injured and that there were strict rules and techniques to be followed.

A native from Chamkaur Sahib, Jujhar said that there was a stereotype being spread that Punjab’s youth were hooked on drugs.

“But I want to tell them that josh of warrior heroes is still intact among our youth. Because of this enthusiasm and high morale, I will now participate in competitions to be held in the US in February,” he said.

Amritpal Singh, Punjab Director of United Sikhs, terming Jujhar Singh as a priceless gem of the Sikh community honoured his achievement by presenting him with a cash award of Rs 21,000.

Amritpal said that Jujhar had defeated Russia’s Ante Gulasch to achieve the distinction of becoming the first Indian champion.

Jujhar has also won several national and international MMA competitions.
