Inmates clashed inside the Central Jail, Ludhiana, and two of them suffered injuries. The injured were taken to the Civil Hospital by the jail authorities. One of the inmates, who suffered serious head injuries, told mediapersons that he was attacked by another inmate with an onion peeler and when he was trying to save himself, he hit his own hand with the same cutter.
As per sources, hearing the commotion in the jail barrack on Tuesday evening, security personnel reached the spot and took the injured to the hospital located in the jail but seeing their critical condition, they were sent to the Civil Hospital for further treatment. One inmate got stitches on his head while the other suffered injuries on his fingers.
One of the injured inmate, Tarun, said in 2021, he had a theft case against him. He came out on bail and started working at a factory. He was declared a proclaimed offender (PO) by the court in the case. Now, he had been in the jail for the past one year.
Tarun said a friend from my neighbourhood was also lodged in the jail. One inmate was forcing his friend to consume drug de-addiction pills available at the de-addiction centre. He had told his friend not to take the pills as he might get addicted to the same. But the suspect started abusing Tarun and hit him on the head with an onion cutter. The alleged assailant also hit his own hand with the cutter.
Doctors administrated stitches on his head.
Clashes between inmates occur frequently in the Central Jail. Earlier also, such incidents had occurred and the authorities need to take steps to prevent such clashes.
