Interns at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) staged a protest on Monday, demanding a hike in their stipend, which they say was grossly inadequate given rising inflation and disparities with other states. Members of the Veterinary Student Union voiced frustration over repeated appeals to the university authorities and government officials that have gone unanswered. The union had met Finance Minister on August 3, who directed a joint meeting between student representatives and university officials. However, the students alleged that the meeting was held on August 18 without their knowledge or participation. “We were denied the opportunity to present our case,” said Dr Harnoor Kaur Sandhu, union president.
Supporting the students, Dr Sunil Momi, Assistant Professor at GADVASU, said: “These interns are the backbone of our clinical services. Their demand is not just valid — it’s urgent. A fair stipend is essential to maintain morale and professionalism.” The students plan to continue their peaceful protest till their demands are
addressed.
