Jaismeen Malhi and Avneet Singh Brar proved their mettle as they were declared the best athletes among women and men, respectively, in the 17th Annual Athletics Meet of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), held at the Punjab Agricultural University ground here on Wednesday.

More than 200 students of GADVASU’s constituent and affiliated colleges participated in various track and field events. The College of Veterinary Science, Ludhiana, bagged the overall trophy.

Gurmeet Singh Khuddian, Minister for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Food Processing, declared the meet open and gave away prizes to the winners. He announced a grant of Rs 1 lakh for the university.

Dr Jatinder Paul Singh Gill, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU, thanked the chief guest and congratulated the position holders.

In the men’s events, Avneet Singh Brar triumphed in the 110-m hurdles, with Harpreet Singh Rehal and Md Rizwan Salim securing the second and third spots, respectively. The javelin throw saw Sartaj taking first place, followed by Avneet Singh Brar and Harpreet Singh Rehal. Umeed Singh Sekhon dominated the 5,000-m race, finishing first, with Lakhbir and Abhishek Kumar taking the subsequent spots. Other notable performances included Parteek winning the 400-m hurdles, Raman claiming the first spot in the 800-m race, and Jasnoor Singh Dhaliwal’s victories in triple, high and broad jump events. Jai Singh came first in shot put In the relays, the College of Veterinary Science, Ludhiana, secured the first place, with the College of Veterinary Science, Rampura Phul (Bathinda), and the College of Fisheries, Ludhiana, following closely behind.

On the women’s side, Inayat Pathak led the javelin throw, with Dhairya Chaudhary and Jugmehnaz Kaur rounding out the top three. In the middle-distance races, Harnoor Grewal took the first spot in the 1,500-m, while Jasjeevan Kaur triumphed in the 800m race and also claimed second position in the 200-m, where Jaismeen Malhi finished first. The field events saw Harsanjh Pannu leading the high jump and broad jump, with Jaismeen Malhi securing the second spot in both. Kirti won the shot put, and Jaismeen Malhi also dominated the discus throw event. The performances in these events showcased a great deal of athleticism and competition across the board.
