Jarkhar sports fest from tomorrow
The 37th Jarkhar Sports Festival, commonly known as the ‘Modern Rural Mini Olympics,’ will be held at Jarkhar village, about 15 km from here, from February 7 to 9.
Addressing a press conference here today, Jagroop Singh Jarkhar and advocate Harkamal Singh, chief organiser and president, respectively, of Jarkhar Sports Academy, said during the three-day mega event, competitions in hockey (boys and girls), football (girls and boys), kabaddi for boys, volleyball, and tug of war for primary school students would be held.
They said multinational motorcycle manufacturing company Royal Enfield was the main sponsor of the year’s edition, while Avon Cycles and Coca-Cola were the co-sponsors, and Dabur and Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) were the associate sponsors. The organisers would honour seven prominent persons for their outstanding contributions in their respective fields that include District Education Officer Ravinder Kaur, eminent folk singer Jaswant Sandila, Olympian Balwinder Singh Shammi, eminent journalists Swaran Tehna and Navdeep Kaur, well-known sports writer Navdeep Gill, and renowned kabaddi player Tara Singh Ghangas during the closing function on February 9.
“The winners in different games would be given prizes worth Rs 10 lakh, including 50 bicycles by Avon Cycles and 20 by Vishal Cycles, while Dabur and Coca Cola would serve refreshments to the participants. Langar for the spectators would be arranged by Gurdwara Manji Sahib Mata Sahib Kaur Committee, Jarkhar,” they added.
Popular singers Jazzy B, Gill Hardeep, Nirmal Sidhu, among others, would entertain the spectators on the concluding day of the annual sports festival. Daljeet Narang, Daljeet Singh Bhatti, Ashok Kumar, etc were present at the conference.
